INDIVIDUAL STUDENT EXCHANGE
Individual Exchange or Free Mover students are visiting students making their own arrangements and payment to study at International University of Sarajevo. This is different from a transfer student, in that you are not an IUS student, but just spending one or two semesters in Sarajevo with the permission of your home university, and transferring the credits you earn at IUS back to your university. Please note: Equivalence and transfer of ECTS points earned at IUS to your home institution will be determined and processed by your home institution.
WHY INDIVIDUAL EXCHANGE?
If you want to experience life in BiH for a longish while, but you do not wish to interrupt your academic career by taking time off your studies, individual exchange allows you to stay up to a year in Bosnia without worrying about the language of education, your courses, legal status or your diploma recognition. You simply study at IUS as a visiting student and then return to your regular studies without losing time.
WHY SARAJEVO?
Sarajevo is not too expensive, especially for a student. Most students live quite comfortably for around 400-600 Euro depending on where they settle in the city. The downtown area is obviously the most expensive part of town, and a furnished flat there can be 300 Euro itself.
The city has an amazing historical background - a mix of cultures that makes you live through different periods in a matter of minutes.
As a capital, most of the country gravitates towards it so you can buy/find almost anything you can buy in any other major city.
Food is great, really great and quite cheap. A good meal at a nice restaurant is about 10 Euro. Vegan and vegetarian options are growing in number and type, as well, and you can find fresh produce straight from the farmers in street markets in different parts of the city any day of the week. People are on average friendly, nice and warm. The pace of life is slow on the whole so any time of day, you see people having coffee for hours with friends or just walking and chatting.
The city is very safe, with people out and about at all hours with little worry, even in colder times.
If you like nature and mountains, you can find plenty of them around Sarajevo. Skiing, hiking, Nordic skiing are all popular.

TUITION FEE
As an Individual Exchange/Free Mover student you are not involved in an exchange program or any other bilateral agreement between universities and are required to pay a fee of 75 Euro per 1 ECTS within a semester. If you take between 19ECTS and 36ECTS maximum, you will pay a flat fee (PLEASE SEE THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE).
HOW TO APPLY
Step 1. In order to apply for a free mover semester, you first should contact your home university International Relations Office regarding their procedure for an outgoing exchange student. Some universities allow only one semester or impose a minimum credit limit, so you should first check your eligibility and any restrictions with your home institution.
Step 2. Once you have the approval of your home institution, information regarding courses offered at IUS in a particular semester can be obtained by contacting program coordinator of the relevant IUS study program. The list of IUS study programs with details about courses and academic staff involved in its realization can be found on the following: https://www.ius.edu.ba/academic-units.
Here is the link for the syllabi: https://www.ius.edu.ba/syllabi
(Please note that here you will need to first enter the letter part of the code in one box and then the number part in the second box to get the syllabus)
However, you may also contact mobility@ius.edu.ba for any help or guidance in this process.
Step 3. Exchange students should get information about whether they need visa or not from the B&H Embassies/Consulates in their home/study country. All students must have a student residence permit in B&H regardless of visa requirements. More information can be found at the Service for Foreigners Affairs website. However, if you hold Bosnian citizenship, you may not need to go through the residence permit process.
